What to expect

1. Triage
When you arrive you will speak with a triage nurse or paramedic. He or she will ask you:

  • Why you are here
  • What medications you take,
  • What allergies you have
  • You’re past medical history.

Your triage specialist will also take your temperature, blood pressure, and pulse.

2. Registration
To register your visit to the emergency department, we will need to gather important information, such as:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Primary care provider

During registration, you will also be asked to sign consent and privacy forms.

3. Treatment
For a medical screening and treatment, you will be brought into an exam room where a nurse will greet you.

A doctor, with specialized training and experience in emergency care, will conduct a medical examination.
Sometimes doctors order tests to determine the cause or extent of illness or injury. The diagnostic center on the ground floor of the hospital offers x-ray, lab, ultrasound, EKGs, and other sophisticated tests. Your doctor will want to see the results of these tests to make decisions about your care. The wait time for tests can vary. Your nurse will tell you how much time will be involved.

With your test results, your physician will work with you and your family on what care or treatment is needed. You may need additional care or testing. Or you may be able to return home to heal.

4. Discharge
We will give you written instructions that explain your doctor’s recommendations for treatment in detail. This will make it easier to remember and carry out the next steps you planned to take. Ask your nurse or doctor any questions you might have.

Before you leave, a discharge specialist will gather billing information. You can discuss insurance information, payment options, or get counseling on financial assistance programs.
