After Your Surgery

Once your surgery is complete, you'll spend some time in the recovery room. Your nurse will constantly assess you and ask about any pain you may be having and treat you as ordered by your doctor or anesthesia. During this time, the surgeon will speak to your family, often giving them information on postoperative care and expectations. When you are fully awake, we will bring you to the Same Day Surgery area to be reunited with your visitor and have a light snack, if you are going home. A registered nurse will then give more detailed instructions to the person who will be with you the night after surgery.

These written and verbal instructions may include information on pain management, dressing care, diet and activity level. They may also include your doctor's recommendation on when you may return to work. You will also be given a list of your medications. For your convenience, one of our staff will also schedule a follow-up appointment before you go home. Nursing staff will consistently assess your readiness to go home throughout this time. Once you have met our standards for discharge, you will be able to return home. If you will be staying in the hospital, once you leave the recovery room, you will be transferred to your hospital room. When you are ready to go home, your nurse will review all your instructions with you and the person caring for you at home. These written and verbal instructions will include items listed in the above paragraph.

Whenever you are asked to take a medication, especially a new one, ask what it is for and its side effects. This will ensure that you are receiving the correct medication. If you have any questions or concerns, you should ask your doctor or nurse. We encourage you and your family to be active participants in your care. Finally, please call your physician if you have any concerns after your surgery.
