Philosophy
When it comes to children's learning, growth and development, everyone has their own beliefs. However, in order to work well together as a team, CVCCC staff and families subscribe to the following over-arching philosophy:
Children learn best when:
- They are recognized as individuals who learn in different ways and at different speeds
- They are able to explore and manipulate materials, both new and old, in order that they can master their surroundings
- They are able to guide their own learning and actively select the majority of their activities
- Teachers develop an individualized, developmentally-appropriate curriculum that emerges from observations of children's interests and needs
- Teachers establish a consistent schedule and a predictable environment which facilitates learning both individual and group developmental goals
- They feel empowered by adults
- The majority of learning activities are open-ended, process-oriented and child-directed
- They are treated with dignity and respect
- A strong relationship exists between their teachers and their parents/guardians
- Teachers observe and physically participate in their play at their level, helping them to master newly learned concepts and introduce new concepts as appropriate (i.e. Vygotsky's scaffolding), and thereby assisting children in their socio-emotional, cognitive, language, and physical growth
- They can choose whether or not to participate in learning activities
- They are given limits when choices are unsafe or not optional (such as handwashing, toileting, and other routine activities)
